A Quiet Room

Picture a quiet room in which one may browse through illustrated works about Monterey’s art and history, all written in imaginative prose, poetry or other literary form.

This is that room. Your imagination will unlock its door.

One who travels our county soon senses echoes of its consequential past. Knowing how quickly echoes fade, we set about constructing a repository of material that reinforces and preserves the aura of an “old Monterey”— essentially, Monterey in the 1800s and early 1900s. Presenting period artwork intertwined with our region’s rich history, we aim to create a collection that evokes the character, the traditions, the feel of Monterey as it existed in its golden age of historical importance and artistic discovery.

Monterey nourishes our soul, and does it best in places that offer solitude, serenity, and the opportunity for reflection—places where one may look, listen, learn, and feel, without interruption. This is one such place. All are welcome here.

We hope our collection will inspire you to contribute something of your own. If you are inclined to share your own creative thoughts about our count's art and history, or a particular early painting, period artist or other golden age artistic production—whether your thoughts be stated poetically, prosaically or in essay form—we will be inclined to print them.
